4 6ft5 (wall mural in Mexican Town)

Posted by
Ralph Jones (Detroit, United States) on 11 February 2010 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

A few weeks ago my very good friend 6ft5 left a comment suggesting I should do more HDR images. I have been looking for the right subject with little or no success, because most days here in Michigan this time of year are gray and overcast. Well I was driving on a clear day and saw this colorful mural and thought of my 6ft5 friend. This is for you, made to order. Sorry it took so long.

Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus.
We hope for better things; it will arise from the ashes.

Mission Statement:
To document the city in an attempt to inspire an appreciation and understanding of the uniqueness of Detroit, her buildings, and her people.

very cool, it's almost like the sky in the mural extends into the actual sky, very cool, we have a lot of murals like that in California :] even in San Jose.

A big blast of colour Ralph, but it's difficult to guess that it was HDR straight away.

11 Feb 2010 6:34pm

@Curly: Yeah, I am kinda' over the over the top HDR processing and have mainly used it to get the most tone that I can.

Beautiful capture of such a vivid mural that creates a lot of depth here, so as not to seem like you're looking at a flat wall. Still trying to figure out what the two opposite side represent.

Just remember that gray and overcast usually play in your favor when working with HDR. So if you ever feel you have the right shot, try it. You might like it. :-)

I love your concept of Detroit. About the HDR... well, the black and whites are much better. Black and whites work better with your concept, as they represent more the honesty and, at least for me, associate with photographs of the time when Detroit was a vanguard of American industrialism; when dark chimneys were the sign of progress and prosperity. Compare for example to Eugene Smith's Pittsburgh series. You have a strong potential here for historical commentary as well as hinting on hopes for revival and better future. Keep it up and all the best.

This is great shot of a colorful mural, and the hdr is great, too. But, I REALLY admire how you handled the wide-angle lens distortion. Nice work!

You got a great upward angle on it.. it really expands the image and gives it that punch of impact.
